IV2nd front century J.C, Phéniciens established a counter on bay of Algiers called "Icosim" (the island with the gulls), become "Icosium" later, under the Roman empire and remained it in Roman possession until the arrival of the vandals, in the medium of V2nd century. It is as from this period that Algiers will start to play a commercial part in the Mediterranean circumference.

In 1510, Spanish occupied the Peñón small island, opposite the port. The Barbarousses brothers, called in reinforcement occupied the city in 1516. Become capital of the barbaresque corsairs, Algiers declared vassal Othoman empire and Spanish were driven out by it.
